Contemporânea began its regular activity in April 2015 as a publishing house specializing in contemporary art, which still includes a digital platform and two printed editions a year. It is a space open to thought, critical reflection and understanding of contemporary creation and the inscription of its practices in a global context.

Its main objective is the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art produced in Portugal, although it also focuses on other international perspectives, within the scope of various contemporary artistic practices, which give rise to debate and critical reflection.

It includes various formats: criticism, written and visual essays, interviews and various reflections on contemporary art and culture. It also includes artists' projects and themed editions.

Contemporânea, celebrating its 10th anniversary, is an editorial and curatorial platform where arts and ideas and other public spheres build narratives and dialog in a collaborative strategy. It has developed a valuable set of contents and skills, as well as a constantly updated archive that organizes, documents and preserves a vast body of knowledge in its various manifestations. It brings together multiple voices and practices that investigate the social, the aesthetic, the sonic, the political and the performative. It contextualizes and problematizes contemporary artistic practices, investigates and cross-references their conceptual premises.

In 2025-2026 it will develop various projects operating in the fields of creation, publishing and programming. It is a collaborative proposal made up of an interdisciplinary, transnational and collaborative approach - dynamics evocative of contemporary artistic practices that are interdisciplinary, global and polysemic. As a whole, it aims to celebrate hybrid universes. The concept of hybridity as a process of negotiation and dialog that fosters new forms of knowledge. Exploring the relationship between moving image, performance, sound and ecological theory, and starting from a post-anthropocentric position, it focuses on artistic practices that problematize these statements.
